Episode 26: The Symbol of the Winter Solstice

We enter into the depths of December and are immersed in a maelstrom of commercialized holiday ~cheer~. This time of year can be exceptionally stressful, with its emphasis on the weight of our purchases. Looking back in pre-Christian history, the winter solstice was frequently celebrated as a returning of longer days, a re-birth of the “Sun King,” a celebration of hope in the dark and cold of the year.

Join us as we explore the importance of the winter solstice, contemplating its astrological meaning, specific winter festivals like Saturnalia and Yule, and the prevalence of themes of death and resurrection, whether we’re talking about the rebirth of the earth, the Sun, or Christ. We strive to call the feminine back into a time of year that tends to focus on the birth of the Christian king, contemplating stories of Ishtar and Innana, to re-enchant what otherwise may feel a chaotic time of year.

This episode features a contemplation of a listener's synchronistic experience with a wasp sting, Chiron in astrology, and Achilles in myth.
